  1. One of the things that consistently amazes me about downtown Sacramento's inability to be itself and realize any new urbanism success is the summoning of people whose professional experiences are in no way relevant to the needs of the downtown. With the volume of urban strategiests that could provide smart growth and Main Street revitalization strategies, I wouldn't pay a dollar for this event as reminds me of how glad I am that I left Sacramento immediately after graduating high school for a community that believes in local business, building rehabilitation, and small-scale revitalization rather than cram-that-arena-down-their-throats vision of Sacramento's uninformed leaders.

  3. I totally agree with you Brandon. Michael Ault and the Downtown Sacramento Partnership are a failure.

  4. Well, I think it sounds pretty interesting. Though probably not interesting enough for the prices they are charging.

  5. I liked the one I attended a few years ago when Christopher Leinberger was the featured speaker. Admittedly I convinced my work to pay for it, and this year it's pretty obvious the focus will be "all arena all the time" so I won't bother. Maybe if they get Donovan Rypkema as the featured speaker I'd go again.

Brandon, if you aren't seeing any "new urbanism success" in Sacramento, you haven't been here in a while. Yes, there are plenty of Chamber of Commerce types who still think that Sacramento can succeed by attracting suburbanites downtown to do some silly thing like shop at a pedestrian mall (or drive on a formerly pedestrian mall) and then go back home to their suburbs. But we're not all like that, honest! Some of us are working rather actively to promote local business, building rehabilitation and small-scale revitalization, all in the name of central city livability, and we'll drag the rest of the city kicking and screaming into a very interesting future.
