This photo is courtesy of the Center for Sacramento History. It’s taken in the late 1930’s when the riverfront was lined with industries including boat construction.
I think the boatyard to the right mostly built barges and steam-powered riverboats for river traffic--carrying raw materials to Sacramento from other points on the river, and carrying finished goods downriver to ports at Oakland and San Francisco. Being a manufacturing and transportation hub meant making the vehicles used for transportation--we also made streetcars and steam locomotives.
